In urban environments, pigeon activity can quickly become a serious issue for residential buildings, particularly in high-rise developments where balconies and ledges provide ideal nesting areas. Accumulated pigeon guano can create hygiene risks, unpleasant living conditions and long-term maintenance concerns for property managers and residents. Rope Access 24 Seven was contacted by a long-standing client to address a pigeon infestation on a balcony located on the 12th floor of a residential tower block. The client required both a specialist clean-up of hazardous pigeon guano and a long-term rope access bird control solution to prevent the birds from returning.
Due to the height and restricted access of the property, our technicians used rope access techniques to safely reach the balcony and carry out both the cleaning and bird prevention works.
The Situation
Pigeon activity is a common issue in high-rise residential buildings across London. Balconies, ledges and roof areas often become nesting points, allowing birds to settle and produce large amounts of guano over time.
Pigeon droppings are more than just a nuisance. Guano can carry over 60 harmful pathogens, posing potential health risks if not handled and removed by trained professionals. In addition, heavy build-up can damage surfaces, create odours and prevent residents from safely using their outdoor spaces.
In this case, the balcony had become heavily contaminated with pigeon droppings, making it unusable for the resident.
The Challenge
The main challenge of this project was the location of the affected area.
The balcony was positioned 12 floors above ground level, making traditional access methods such as ladders or external platforms impractical. Additionally, the works needed to be carried out safely without disturbing other residents within the building.
The solution required a safe high-level access method, specialist biohazard cleaning procedures and an effective bird prevention system.
Our Approach
Our objective was to restore the balcony to a safe, clean condition while also preventing pigeons from returning in the future.
To achieve this, Rope Access 24 Seven deployed a combination of specialist services from across the 24 Seven Group, including our rope access technicians and specialist cleaning team.
By combining rope access bird control methods with specialist guano cleaning, we were able to deliver a safe, effective and long-term solution.
The Process
Initial Assessment
Our team attended site following a request from a long-term client to inspect the affected balcony.
The assessment confirmed a significant build-up of pigeon guano and nesting debris. Due to the balcony’s location on the 12th floor of a high-rise residential building, rope access techniques were identified as the safest and most efficient way to carry out the work.
A full risk assessment and rope access plan were prepared to ensure safe access for our technicians.
Specialist Cleaning
The cleaning phase of the project was carried out by our specialist trauma cleaning division, as pigeon guano can contain harmful pathogens if not treated and removed correctly.
Our technicians safely removed the contaminated debris, disinfected the area and restored the balcony to a hygienic condition using professional biohazard cleaning methods.
Qualified Technicians
The cleaning works were completed by trained technicians who have undertaken professional training with the National Academy of Specialist Cleaners.
At the same time, our IRATA-certified rope access technicians installed a bird prevention system using rope access techniques.
Specialist bird netting was installed across the balcony area to prevent pigeons from accessing the space in the future.
Clean & Protected Outcome
Once the cleaning and installation works were completed, the balcony was fully restored and protected from further pigeon activity.
The new bird netting system now prevents pigeons from landing or nesting on the balcony.
The Outcome
The results speak for themselves. The balcony, which had previously been unusable due to pigeon contamination, has now been fully cleaned and protected.
The resident can now safely use the balcony again, with a rope access bird control system installed to prevent future infestations.
Conclusion
Bird infestations in high-rise buildings can quickly escalate into hygiene and maintenance issues if left untreated.
This project demonstrates how rope access bird control solutions allow specialist technicians to safely reach difficult areas of buildings, remove hazardous pigeon contamination and install long-term prevention systems.
